Ji-Li's opinions change completely throughout the book. In the beginning she thought that she was a privileged girl and her family was perfect. After she discovered she was from a wealthy family and that wealthy families were not seen in a good way at the time, she started to think that her family wasn't so perfect and she became shy when she looked at the people involved in the program that enabled little kids to be involved with the Red Guards.
She also becomes more mature, she learns that appearances can be deceiving, that there are many bad people in the world but this can't be determined by how they look like or their social class. She became more mature because she lived many strange and difficult situations. Ji-Li learned that the world is unfair sometimes, for example when she studied hard to gat in a good junior high school, she though that she got in but in the end the schools were distributed by the place you lived in.
