apartment, with her grandmother, father, mother, sister, and brother. Ji - Li Jiang, was a great student until the Cultural Revolution of China began. Sadly, at the age of 13 her father was accused of listening to foreign radio. Soon after that, he was forced and put into hard labor for the government. She was humiliated by all the people in her class, and prevented her to become a red successor. A red successor is a person who will become a red guard, but only when they are old enough. Thankfully, after the Revolution finished, her and her family decided to move to Hawaii. In Hawaii after learning english she decided to write the book, Red Scarf Girl, a memoir of her life in China.

ReplyDeleteGood job on your post! It was very interesting to read. You said that her father was accused of listening to foreign radio stations. In the book, Ji-Li wasn't aloud to audition for something because her dad said they would do political checks of her family and that she wouldn't pass because of that. I wonder if their family past has gotten in trouble for doing something that involved foreign things too. What do you think their family issue was? Overall, great post, thanks!
It's interesting how her family story made me actually think it was a summary of the book. I question myself if she took make facts of the book from what actually happened to her family. If this story is actually a rewritten, different story, with the same concept of her life. What do you think? Answering Jessica's question: "I wonder if their family past has gotten in trouble for doing something that involved foreign things too. What do you think their family issue was?" I would say yes. Probably something with Ji-Li-Jiang grandpa or older family member. I am not exactly sure what though. But, I have a feeling, a prediction, later in the book its past will be revealed and they are going to have a punishment. Probably be lower ranked in society, and get the jobs no one wants. Like maybe cleaning streets. Bethany what do you think will happen?

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. I thought you had a lot of interesting and pertaining details in it that really allowed the reader to comprehend what you were getting at. Even though I also did the same role, I still learned new things about her. My favourite part of your post was when you talked about her family and their experience. I think that simply explaining about her family really was explaining about the book in general. It made me realize how personal this story really is, and how focused it is on solely her and her family. Why do you think she decided to write about only herself, and less about the Cultural Revolution in general?

Great post. I liked you post, and how you talked about her father and his story about the radio. I thought it was interesting of you to say that after the radio she became humiliated by her class mates. I liked how you compared a red guard from a red succesor. Good post.
