Connection Captain - Melissa Machado

“That poor guy,” I Finally said. “He should know better than to dress that way, but I’d just die if somebody cut my pants open in front of everybody like that.”

When you read this quote, you probably think it has no importance. However, I can clearly connect to this because when something awful happens in front of me, I don't do anything. Yet, later I feel sorry for the person. For example, I see bullying many times in school and sometimes I do try to stand up for the person, but a lot of times no one stands up for them.  Including, another example is when we see people under the bridges or asking for money in the streets of São Paulo, most of the time we don't even help them and even keep complaining of our life. This relates to this quote in the book because after the red scarf girl left she said that to her friend, but at the moment she laughed with the other people around her.

I think that both images represent what I was saying. First, the first image you can clearly see that the girl is being bullied and that the three girls are laughing together. The second image is showing four girls that shopped Hollister clothes. This image represents what I was saying because a lot of girls they shop Hollister, Abercrombie, and Victoria Secret just to be cool because that’s what many people do. So, it shows that many people go with the flow and that’s why they laugh with other people when bullying occurs.

“Wow. You really scared me, Dad.” I laughed with relief. “I know that. Principal Long told us it would be very competitive. I know it’s just an audition, but who knows? I might be lucky, right?”

In this part of the book Ji- Li was so exited because of her audition. However, her dad's reaction surprised her because he didn't want her to try it. In the other hand, as you can see she keeps thinking positive. This reminds me of when Brazil and Germany played against each other in the world cup. Everyone at my house would say that we were going to lose and that we had no chance. I agreed, but I kept thinking positive, so I wouldn't feel down like everyone else was. I know that we ended up losing, but even though we should always think positive because things could be worse. At least they scored once!

This picture is a good example of what I was saying because the people in the picture believe that together they can do it. So, by thinking on that they are thinking positive because they believe that they can do it instead of believing that nothing will work.

  1. I agree with your first connection. You see people get bullied and you feel really bad and embarrassed for them. Even if you feel those things you still do not have the guts to stand up for them because you want to be cool. Like your example for the clothes. A lot of people shop at expensive known stores like Abercrombie, Hollister, and Victoria Secret. I mean it is ok to have clothes from their but just shopping there and wasting your money to be cool is just dumb. You should be friends with people that actually like the same thing as you. And I definitely agree with you on your second connection. I always go through life thinking positive. Because if you think about everything in a negative way it is not going to get you anywhere in life. For example I came in for my math quiz in a positive mood because I knew I studied hard and would try my best. In the end I got a four I was satisfied with my grade but I knew I could do better. Instead of thinking about it in a negative way, I would just have to study harder and always keep trying my best. That is what gets you through life. Because if you just have negative attitude for everything you are not going to achieve anything.

  2. I feel like your first connection can connect with a lot of people. When the bullying is happening, some people just listen and watch attentively while others just go away. I have rarely been in a situation when someone actually went and stood up for the one getting bullied. Some people seem to think of only themselves, thinking that if they try to stop it, they'll be next. Other people just don't think at all, they don't think about what is going on, they just walk away as if it were nothing.

Your first picture makes more sense with your connection since it is focused on the sad girl walking away, while others are laughing in the background, laughing because they are making that girl feel worst and worst every day.
In your second picture, at first I didn't understand it so much but soon started to realize that I know many people like that. They shop at some designer stores or stores that everyone else shops at just to fit in. If there is an amazing quality coat in a designer store, it will obvious be expensive. Though, people don't realize that there is that same quality coat for more than a hundred dollars less in a less popular store. People are only shopping at these places mostly because of the brand and to show off when there are other places with the same thing, less expensive.

Your quote on Ji-li does give out the message of being positive though I feel like it is also giving out another one, I just don't really know which one yet. I liked how in the picture there was a little saying, "Together... we can...". It also gives out the message of being positive but also of not giving up and do your hardest on what you want.

  3. I really liked your post and it is great. The first picture demonstrates how the bullies affect the victims. However in my thought Ji-li Jiang is suffering from anxiety and disappointment more than bullying. She is criticizing herself than others.

The second image in my thought shows me just girls hanging out with each other. I can see that people stick with close friends rather than making new friends. But the explanation was good overall.

  4. I agree with both of your connections, but I also believe that the passages you chose can mean other things as well. The first quote shows a form of extreme bullying involving government orders and a lot of violence. Unfortunately, this is also happening around the world right now. For example, the current war going on in Iraq against the jihadist, Islamic terrorist group called ISIS is a very sad, yet real example of how minorities and those with different views (like being a capitalist or an anti-revolutionary in this book's case) are tortured and killed for believing in different things.

I don't completely agree with your second connection. According to the story, the passage that you copied was describing Ji-Li's small moment of surprise and shock before realizing what her parents were trying to say. At first, she was positive and surprised, but later on started crying and became very distressed at school thinking how everything was unfair and how unjust her father was.

  5. I agree with both of the connections you chose to make. The first image does not capture perfectly the idea because I find that instead of making fun of him she felt bad for him. Maybe an image about pity. Also your second image was very interensting because united they work together. It's like what Chairman Mao is saying, the idea that they should work together to make China a better place, but I don't find that it really has to do with your connection.

  6. I like the fact that you connected to daily things that people can relate to and underhand. I agree with you on the Hollister girls picture, Ji-li is sort of moved by the bigger group. Lots of people want to change because its what everyone is doing. I also agree with you on the believing, and being positive. But do you have the page number where she was thinking positively about her fathers answer. She seemed pretty upset. But in total I like your connection and you described them in a way everyone can understand.
