Why was this book controversial? Which themes or ideas were challenging to society?
This book was very controversial and the theme of the book is surviving a culture event. This cultural event in this book is the Chinease revolution. This book is very controversial with the society because it is a challenge to live in this revolution. For example, the Red guards were looking for the four olds and they were going in each house to try to find it. They went to Ji- Li’s house and her parents were burning their own photos because they were scared that the Red Guards would see their photos and they would know they had a black class. (J ,172) “Hush, hush!” Grandma pulled us to her quickly. “It’s nothing. They’re just burning some pictures.” We looked puzzled. “Your mother heard today that photos of people in old-fashioned long gowns and mandarin jackets are considered fourolds. So your parents are burning them in the bathroom.” This piece of writing finished me off with this chapter because it made me think that this people don’t have even the pictures of when they were young they had to burn them to survive.
